2011 Des Moines Mass for Life: The annual Mass for Life organized by Catholic Charities of the Diocese of Des Moines will be celebrated on Friday, January 21 at St. Pius X Church in Urbandale, Iowa. Bishop Richard Pates will preside; diocesan priests are invited to concelebrate and deacons to vest and distribute communion. The annual Mass for Life promotes the Church’s belief of the sanctity of life and dignity of the human person. Bring your entire family and join the community of prayers that will proclaim our belief in life from conception to natural death.
The Pope of the People: An exciting addition to this year’s Mass will b a sneak-peak into an upcoming musical about Pope John Paul II written by Des Moines’ own Tom Quiner called The Pope of the People. Say what…a musical about Pope John Paul II? You got it, and it is just fantastic! The cast (including yours truly) will be sharing prayerful excerpts from the musical prior to the Mass beginning at 6:00 p.m. I will be writing more about the musical in the days and weeks to come, so just a little bit here for now. The musical is being performed at many Des Moines area parishes during Lent 2011 as a part of the 100th anniversary of the Catholic Diocese of Des Moines. Composer Quiner characterizes this art form as “evangelization through entertainment” and this production will certainly make Jesus Christ known and loved in our time for those who experience its message and music.
2011 Iowa Prayer for Life: One more event for Iowans to mark on the calendar is the annual Iowa Prayer for Life on February 8, 2011. Abby Johnson, author of Unplanned: The Dramatic True Story of the Planned Parenthood Leader Who Crossed the Life Line to Fight for Women in Crisis, will be in Des Moines sharing her conversion story with other right-to-life advocates and state legislators. Johnson, who quit her job in October 2009 as a director of a Planned Parenthood clinic in Texas, will also join the Annual Prayer for Life at the Iowa State Capitol.
