Seven Quick Takes Friday (Vol. 11)

After several weeks off, they’re ba-a-a-a-ck! My Friday 7 Quick Takes that is!

1 – Biking For Babies

Heard of Biking For Babies? If your answer is no, check it out now! Our friend Jimmy is the co-founder of the group, and the Biking For Babies team is gearing up for another 800+ mile pro-life ride from Louisiana to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. Their ride begins Monday, June 13 with the goal to raise $15,000 for pro-life charities. Spread the word about the ride, pray for the health and safety of the team members (it’s gonna be a hot ride!), and follow the bikers’ journey starting next week.

2 – St. Joseph, Pray for Us

Today Fathers For Good, the online initiative by the Knights of Columbus, rolls out a video-based Novena to St. Joseph for the cultural healing of fatherhood. Visit the Fathers for Good website to download the prayers and watch daily video reflections on the life and virtues of St. Joseph as we pray for his intercession for the vocation of fatherhood.

3 – Family Movie Night Tackles Bullying

Family Movie Night returns this Saturday at 8/7c on NBC with the movie Field of Vision, a high school football drama whose back-story tackles a very serious issue — bullying. I screened and reviewed the movie and found it to be well written; the diversity of characters wasn’t forced, the story flowed naturally, and the performances were excellent. Accompanying the cast is a fantastic soundtrack that added a deeper dimension to the drama unfolding in the movie. Tune in Saturday or set the DVRs to continue supporting the Family Movie Night movement.

4 – A Tweeting Bishop

I finally watched my DVR’d episode of The Today Show that aired June 2 live from the Vatican. I was impressed with the show’s respectful presentation of our Church, its history, and our leader Pope Benedict XVI. Archbishop Dolan co-hosted the segments, and he was charismatic as ever. During a segment about how the Church is using technology to evangelize, I learned about the social media endeavors of Bishop Christopher Coyne, the auxiliary bishop of the Archdiocese of Indianapolis. His “Thoughts of a Catholic Bishop” blog is great; and his tweets are both edifying and hilarious (e.g., he tweeted recently, “Quote of the day from Caddyshack ‘Remember Danny – two wrongs don’t make a right but three rights make a left…’”). Certainly a Bishop who tweets lines from Caddyshack is worth a “follow” on Twitter (@bishopcoyne)!

5 – Baby, It’s Hot Outside!

Our air conditioning unit bit the dust as we experienced near 100-degree temperatures for several days this week. To beat the heat, Lucy (2.75 years) and I spent lots of time chillin’ in cooler places. During our adventures, I learned a very valuable lesson: Lucy would have been perfectly content riding up and down the mall escalators 100 times over rather than sitting through (and only half-way through mind you) a movie that cost $6.75. Yes, I paid $6.75 for a two-year-old to attend this particular theater’s Wednesday matinee, but I was really excited for some respite from the heat. Guess the age-old parenting tool is true – the best toys are cardboard boxes, pots and pans, and . . . escalators!

6 – Mrs. Hardy’s Harley

I don’t know about you, but when I turn 90, I hope to have this kind of spunk. Mrs. Hardy helps at our parish’s school, and as you might suspect from the picture, is loved by all! As one student wrote about her recently, “She can even make grown-ups behave.”

7 – Weekend Blessings

My niece is being baptized Saturday, and Joel and I were asked to be her godparents. We are honored, excited, and greatly looking forward to celebrating with the extended family! Our weekend is shaping up to be full of blessings – may your weekend be full of them as well! Head over to Conversion Diary to read more Quick Takes!
