7 Quick Takes: Here Comes the Behold Conference

The 2012 Behold Conference is a-l-m-o-s-t here! It is going to be a special event for the 500+ women attending with talks by Kate Wicker, the Sisters of Life, and Ginny Baldridge; music by Curb Records Recording Artist, Marie Miller; Mass; Adoration; and Confession. Bonus: there is a “Meet the Bloggers” segment this year, and I am honored to be participating. The other invited bloggers are women I respect and admire, and I have been pinching myself for several days in anticipation of friendships that will be fostered. During the conference, each blogger will have an area to meet & greet with conference attendees.

Even though this excitement, I must admit I had an episode last week, one where the Devil creeped in and pulled out all sorts of spiritual warfare arsenal to get inside my head. He knew just the right buttons to push so that I would start questioning my self-worth and doubting my participation in the event. For example, here is a sampling of my thoughts.

— 1 —

Why on earth would women want to stop by my table? I don’t have a commodity to sell or promote. Nothing to give out, nothing to autograph. And then I start stacking myself against the lovely Hallie Lord. You see, Hallie runs the very successful blog, Betty Beguiles, and her book, Style, Sex, and Substancesold out on Amazon the very first day it was released. What’s more? Her book is so “saucy” that YouTube banned her book trailer for “inappropriate content”!

How can I compete with that?

— 2 —

Then the doubting gets thicker. I’ve only been blogging for 2 years. Just who do I think I am — writing for a blog called “The Practicing Catholic”? Like I have some special claim to that title? Jennifer Fulwiler will be there … now she’s a practicing Catholic. Between her personal blog Conversion Diary and posts for the National Catholic Register, she’s so popular even angry feminist atheists troll her site attempting to engage in battle. Her blogposts regularly generate hundreds of comments. A couple hundred visitors a day to my site is a good day.

How can I compete with that?

— 3 —

Then my, oh my! Stand back. Don’t get me started on Ms. Danielle Bean. She’s hotter than ever with her roles as co-host for the new television show The Gist airing on CatholicTV, the editor-in-chief for both Catholic Digest and Faith & Family Live, and author of a handful of books. People will want to talk to her, take her picture, hug her. I want to hug her.

How can I compete with that?

So as I sulked in my self-prescribed nothingness, I tried to back out of my Meet The Bloggers commitments. And as I articulated my thoughts to one of the conference organizers, I realized how self-centered, foolish, and sinful they were. Big, ugly pride. (Sorry to put you through that, Nancy. You are a saint!)

Get over yourself, Lisa! Take a hike, Satan!

My sin of pride nearly took me away from something with the potential to be really awesome. I vowed to put it behind me and own up to my participation. Who cares that I don’t have a hot book, blog, or TV show? After all, I’ll have this hot accessory with me — my six-week old son Jude.

Yes, you can hold him. No, you don’t need to sanitize your hands.

— 5 —

And as I continued to keep my ego in check and think about what an honor it is simply to be invited, I came up with an idea. One thing Joel and I have done well with the blog is developed a partnership with The Maximus Group who markets Ignatius Press materials. So I called our friends and asked, “Hey, wanna sponsor a giveaway at my table?” And voila! They have graciously set me up with some terrific swag to giveaway, and to the lucky winner will go books such as My Brother, The Pope; Mother Teresa of Calcutta; Adam and Eve After the Pill; Extreme Makeover; and DVDs such as The Mighty Macs and Archbishop Fulton Sheen: Servant of All, and a CD by Marie Bellet.

Yet another reason to stop by my table and say hello!

God uses the word “behold” to draw particular attention to what He is saying. For example, “Behold, I am with you always.” “Behold, you shall conveive a son and name Him Jesus.” I love that He’s already using the Behold Conference to say a few things I need to hear.

Thank goodness priests will be available for Confession!

— 7 —

While this is all a little tongue-in-cheek, I really am excited for a weekend of renewal. Will you be there? If so, please stop by my table. I’m looking forward to fostering new friendships with faithful Catholic women. And it’s not too late to register! The online registration deadline has been extended until Friday, March 9th at 8:00 a.m. Come join us!

If you aren’t going, please pray that this conference will celebrate the dignity, beauty, and femininity of all who attend.

And now I’m off to pack. Another near occasion of sin. For more Quick Takes, visit Conversion Diary.

Lisa! I can’t wait to stop by your table, give you a big hug, and hold baby Jude!!

I know the feeling about that sneaky Devil creeping in! I’m so glad you sent the Devil packing!!

You are awesome and I can’t wait to “meet” you officially!

    See you soon!

My first reaction was…wait, we each have tables? Well, that will be weird, since I’m not bringing anything. Maybe I can do a little dance if people stop by.

Thanks for the kind words, and I can’t wait to meet you in person!

Loved this post! I will stop by your table and say hi Lisa and BEG to hold Jude! My youngest is now 7 and much too big to hold like that for long anymore. :( I will also be at the blogger’s summit. Don’t worry about feeling like you don’t fit — that is me! I’ve only been blogging for 2 months now and am still learning how to log in on a regular basis let alone write a book! So, if you see someone standing in front of your table in awe of someone like yourself who has blogged now for 2 years and was invited to come because of your blog — that would be me. I’m hoping some of you wonderful ladies can give a newbie like me some tips. :-)

Lisa, I’m looking forward to meeting you! I’ll happily hold your 6 week old until my 9 month old shows up later in the afternoon – he’s barely a baby anymore! So glad you are going to be a part of this!

Here’s my near occasion of sin ….. I’m so jealous I can barely see! I really wanted to go .. Silly ole works of corporal mercy job ;) (I’m an ER nurse)

I want a huge write up when you get back … And pass on huge hugs to Hallie, Jen, Sarah and Leanne!

I hope that you have a wonderful time, even if the Devil is trying to bring you down. (That just must mean that you’re doing something right if he has to try to work on you like that.)

I was bummed that my husband had to be away some on Saturday, as I was about to register for Behold when I found out that it wasn’t a possibility for me this year. But, I’m hoping that next year will be my year for Behold. :)

  7. says

Oh man. I hadn’t even THOUGHT about giving something out…and I realized late last night that I HAVE NO BOOKS OF MY OWN (as in, I didn’t buy any to sell or give out or anything). But I *do* have a big “giveaway” box…

If it makes you feel any better, Lisa, those thoughts you had? Yeah, I’m SO WITH YOU.

*I* will stop by your table. Maybe I’ll even be right beside you and we will have a chance to talk to each other (forget other people!). :)

  8. Mary Beth says

Well, I don’t think I’m supposed to have envy over this conference-but it’s heading that way! (I have considered driving to Texas to meet Jen Fulwiler. But that would be stalking. Right?).

You and your fellow travelers will be in my prayers for a most fruitful weekend. I’m sure we’ll all benefit from the posts you all make after the weekend!

  9. says

Wow, what a great post. I’m sure I would have the same thoughts as you! There’s always someone better, right? But only you can do what God made you for…Wish I were there this weekend…sick babies have made me forego my tix…first time at your blog…Fun time!

  10. says

I found you today for the first time, and I’m pretty sure I’ll be back. You had me at “no, you don’t need to sanitize your hands.”

Good luck at the conference — it sounds great!

  11. Lisa Roder says

so happy that I got to hold baby Jude during the bloggers meet up Friday night, and it was so nice to meet you Lisa!

  12. Karey M. says

Lisa, Hope you had a great time. I have been really busy lately and don’t have much time for blogs, but yours is one of the few I make time for. I love it. God Bless.
